Banjara Lake, lake in India
Banjara Lake is a reservoir built in 1930 in Hyderabad's Banjara Hills neighborhood, located in the middle of the city. The shallow water body reaches about 5 meters deep and is surrounded by rocky edges and green areas, though debris and waste have affected its appearance.
The lake was created in 1930 and was originally part of a connected valley system of multiple water bodies. Decades of urban expansion transformed the natural landscape, filling some water bodies and changing water flow patterns throughout the area.
The lake is named after the Banjara, a nomadic community historically connected to the area. It remains a place where residents gather for morning walks and religious visits, though its role as a social center has diminished with urban growth.
A walking track about 900 meters long is being developed around the lake, with entrances from nearby roads for easy access. Visit early in the morning or late in the evening when the air is fresher and the space is quieter.
The lake was once part of a natural water network where water flowed through connected channels from larger reservoirs to smaller ponds, most of which have disappeared or been built over. This lost system reveals how rapidly Hyderabad transformed from a landscape shaped by water to one dominated by urban construction.
