Kodaikanal Lake, Star-shaped artificial lake in Kodaikanal, India.
Description
Kodaikanal Lake is an artificial body of water with a distinctive star-like outline, covering around 60 acres at an elevation of 2285 meters. The surrounding landscape features green hills that form part of the Palani mountain range to the northwest.
History
The lake was constructed in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the collector of Madurai, as part of efforts to develop the region. This engineering project fundamentally shaped how the mountain area would develop over time.
Culture
The water body plays a central role in the rhythm of local life, with people gathering along its shores for leisure and contemplation. Residents and travelers alike treat it as a natural refuge within the hillside landscape.
Practical
The boat club offers rowing and pedal boats for rent, allowing visitors to explore the water from different perspectives. A paved road encircling the lake provides an easy walking route for those who prefer to stay on land.
Did you know?
The lake feeds into Silver Cascade, a waterfall that drops into the landscape below and carries special significance for local people. This connection reveals how the lake functions as part of a larger water system serving the region.
