Meola Glacier, Mountain glacier in Pithoragarh district, India
Meola Glacier sits at the base of the five Panchchuli peaks in the Lassar Yankti valley and joins with Saun Glacier to form part of the Panchchuli Glacier system. Its snout reaches about 3,600 meters elevation and creates a natural gathering point for the surrounding area.
The glacier functioned as a traditional passage for shepherds and travelers crossing between mountain communities in the Kumaon Himalayas over many generations. This role made it an important link in the region's historical routes and connections.
Local communities in the Kumaon region view this glacier as a vital water source and natural part of their mountain environment. It has shaped their connection to the Himalayas for generations.
Reaching the glacier requires a multi-day trek from Tawaghat through the villages of Bailing, Son, and Duktu. The final section along Duktu Nala takes about an hour on foot and demands proper footwear and experience with mountain terrain.
The snout area functions as a natural base camp for mountaineers attempting to climb the surrounding Panchchuli peaks. Many expeditions launch from this point, giving the location a special role in the regional climbing community.
