Metcalfe House, 19th century retreat house in Mehrauli, India
The Metcalfe House features traditional British colonial architecture with stone columns, high ceilings, and remains of decorative walls within the Mehrauli Archaeological Park.
Sir Thomas Metcalfe, the British Resident at the Mughal court, constructed this residence in 1835 by transforming a 16th-century tomb of Quli Khan.
The local workers named the property Matka Kothi, combining their pronunciation of Metcalfe with the Indian word Kothi, meaning house.
Visitors can reach the archaeological site by taking the metro to Saket station and then hiring an auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw to Mehrauli Archaeological Park.
The residence included an underground billiards room and summer chambers called tykhanas, designed to provide relief from the Delhi heat.
