Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is a protected freshwater lake area sitting within the city of Porbandar in the Indian state of Gujarat. The lake draws a wide range of water birds throughout the year, including flamingos, teals, ibis, and curlews.
The area was officially protected in 1988 and came under the Gujarat Forest Department in 1990. Since then, the department has managed the site and monitored the bird populations that use the lake.
The lake sits in the middle of city life, and local residents often walk along its banks to watch the birds. It is one of those rare places where everyday urban life and wildlife share the same space without conflict.
Visiting between October and March gives the best chance of seeing migratory birds alongside the species that stay all year. The site is easy to walk around, so comfortable shoes and a pair of binoculars are all you really need.
This sanctuary is the only one of its kind located inside city limits anywhere in Gujarat. Despite being surrounded by urban buildings, flamingos visit the lake regularly, which is unusual for a site with so much activity nearby.
