Gjáin, Natural valley in Þjórsárdalur, Iceland.
Gjáin is a valley in South Iceland where the river Rauðá creates multiple waterfalls and small pools set among black basalt columns and patches of green moss. The formations appear almost sculptural, with water cascading through natural stone shapes.
Vikings settled the surrounding region from around the 9th century until the massive eruption of Hekla volcano in 1104 forced them to leave. This eruption remained a defining moment in the valley's settlement history.
Local stories describe this valley as home to supernatural beings from old Norse tales, and many visitors feel drawn to these folklore connections. The landscape itself seems to echo these ancient beliefs.
You reach this valley by walking a hiking trail of about 2 kilometers starting from the nearby ruins of Stöng. The best time to visit runs from June through September when conditions are most favorable.
The area served as a filming location for the television series Game of Thrones, specifically scenes from season 4. Film fans recognize the landscape from the screen.
