Geysir geothermal field, Geothermal field near Bláskógabyggð, Iceland
The Geysir geothermal field contains multiple hot springs, mud pots, and steam vents across a volcanic landscape of basalt and rhyolite formations.
The geothermal field formed in the late 13th century following intense earthquakes and an eruption of Mount Hekla in Haukadalur valley.
The term geyser in English derives from this Icelandic site, originating from the Old Norse verb geysa, meaning to gush or rush forward.
Located at 727 meters elevation, the field features Strokkur geyser, which releases water columns reaching 30 meters high every 10 minutes.
The Great Geysir chamber extends 20 meters deep with an 18-meter-wide opening, capable of projecting water up to 80 meters when active.
