Aqua Claudia, Roman aqueduct in Rome, Italy
The Aqua Claudia features stone arches stretching across the Roman countryside, reaching heights of up to 27 meters with precise engineering calculations for water flow.
Construction began under Emperor Caligula in 38 CE and completed by Emperor Claudius in 52 CE, with a total cost of 350 million sesterces.
The aqueduct system demonstrated Roman engineering excellence through gravity-powered water distribution, serving as a model for hydraulic infrastructure for over 1000 years.
The structure transported 191,190 cubic meters of water daily from the Cerulean and Curtian springs near the Sublacensis road to various distribution points in Rome.
The double-channel system at Porta Maggiore carried water from both Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus, using separate conduits stacked within the same structural framework.
