Nivolet Pass, Mountain pass in Graian Alps, Italy
Nivolet Pass is a mountain pass in the Graian Alps that connects the Orco Valley with Valsavarenche. The road features approximately 33 tight switchbacks as it climbs to 2612 meters elevation.
The SP50 road was constructed between 1953 and 1963 to provide access to two hydroelectric dams in the higher elevations of Gran Paradiso National Park. This engineering project opened up previously remote mountain areas in the region.
The pass gained international attention through its appearance in the 1969 film The Italian Job, where the road featured prominently in several scenes. This has made it a destination for motorcycle enthusiasts and film fans worldwide.
The pass closes from October through May, and during summer months vehicles cannot access the final six kilometers on Sundays and holidays. Plan to visit on weekdays during the warmer months for unrestricted access.
Three artificial lakes – Serrù, Agnel, and Ceresole – lie beneath the pass, creating a sequence of water reservoirs along the mountain route. These reservoirs supply the hydroelectric facilities and shape the landscape of the area.
