Urn Tomb, Rock-cut tomb in Petra, Jordan
The Urn Tomb features a monumental facade carved into limestone cliffs, with a deep courtyard surrounded by colonnades and multiple burial chambers.
Constructed around 70 CE during the Nabataean period, this structure was initially created as a royal tomb for King Malchus II of the Nabataean kingdom.
Bishop Jason transformed the tomb into a Christian cathedral in 447 CE, adding three apses to the rear wall and installing an altar for religious ceremonies.
The tomb requires climbing numerous stone steps to access the entrance, and visitors need a Petra admission ticket to explore the archaeological complex.
During solstices and equinoxes, sunlight penetrates through openings to illuminate specific carved niches at the back of the main chamber.
