Sumida-ku, Special ward in eastern Tokyo, Japan
The Sumida ward stretches across 13.77 square kilometers in northeastern Tokyo, bordered by the Sumida and Arakawa rivers with a population of 277,058 residents.
The ward formed in 1947 through the merger of Honjo and Mukojima districts, taking its name from the former town of Sumida and the river that flows alongside it.
The Ryogoku district within Sumida houses the Kokugikan arena, where professional sumo wrestlers compete in grand tournaments throughout the year.
Multiple train lines connect Sumida through Kinshicho Station, which serves as a transportation hub linking the JR Sobu Line and several subway routes.
The 634-meter Tokyo Skytree, completed in 2012, marks the Sumida skyline as the tallest tower in Japan and functions as the primary television broadcasting structure.
