Naka-ku

Naka-ku is an administrative ward in Yokohama located in eastern Kanagawa Prefecture, covering about 21 square kilometers. The ward has low-lying areas in the north and elevated terrain toward its center, with waterfront zones that define much of its character.

The area began to grow after the Kanagawa Treaty of 1859 opened Yokohama as a treaty port and foreign settlements were established there. This early connection with trade and foreign communities set the foundation for what the ward would become over the following decades.

The ward is home to residents from many countries, and this international mix is visible in daily life through the shops, restaurants, and public spaces you encounter. The presence of different languages and traditions shapes how the neighborhood feels and functions.

Yamashita Park was created in 1930 using debris from the Great Kanto earthquake as landfill to build the waterfront space. This park stands as a reminder of how the area recovered and rebuilt after a major natural disaster.
