Nishikyō Ward, Administrative ward in western Kyoto, Japan
Nishikyō-ku extends over 59 square kilometers of varied terrain, from urban areas to mountains reaching 678 meters in elevation, with the Katsura River defining its boundaries.
The ward emerged through municipal reorganization in 1976 when authorities separated it from Ukyō-ku to improve urban development management in western Kyoto.
The Katsura Imperial Villa stands within Nishikyō-ku, representing classical Japanese architecture through its buildings, gardens, and traditional tea ceremony spaces.
The International Research Center for Japanese Studies, Kyoto City University of Arts, and Kyoto College of Economics provide educational opportunities for 148,370 residents.
Saihō-ji temple, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, contains gardens with 120 types of moss creating patterns across its grounds.
