Ryōgoku, Sumo district in Sumida-ku, Japan
The Ryōgoku neighborhood centers around the Kokugikan Sumo Stadium, where professional wrestlers train and compete in traditional Japanese wrestling matches throughout the year.
The district received its name from the Ryōgoku Bridge constructed in 1659, connecting the provinces of Edo and Shimōsa across the Sumida River.
Professional sumo tournaments take place three times annually at the Kokugikan stadium, drawing thousands of spectators to witness Japan's national sport.
The area contains numerous restaurants specializing in chanko nabe, a protein-rich hot pot dish traditionally consumed by sumo wrestlers during their training.
The neighborhood houses multiple sumo stables where wrestlers live and train, allowing visitors to observe morning practice sessions under specific protocols.
