Kuni, dissolved municipality in Agatsuma district, Gunma prefecture, Japan
Kuni was a small dissolved municipality in Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, located in a mountainous area surrounded by forests and gentle hills. The area featured hot springs such as Shiriyaki and Hanashiki, while nearby Lake Nozori marked the border between Gunma and Nagano.
The municipality was established on July 1, 1900, and was formed from six smaller villages whose name reflected this grouping. It became part of the newly created Nakanojō area in 1994 and officially ceased to exist as an independent municipality on March 28, 2010.
The area is accessible by narrow mountain roads and the visitor experience is primarily shaped by walking and nature exploration. The location offers simple activities such as hiking and visiting the hot springs, with warmer months being the ideal time to visit.
The name derives from the word for the number six and refers to the merger of six original villages, a detail rooted in ancient Japanese records. This choice of name in the early 1900s reflects the tightly woven history of the local communities.
