Akmola Region, Administrative region in northern Kazakhstan
Akmola is an administrative region in northern Kazakhstan that covers wide grassland and low hills. The area includes several cities and many rural districts where farming and mining play an important role.
The regional name changed several times during the 20th century and was renamed Akmola after Kazakhstan gained independence. During the Soviet era, the Virgin Lands campaign promoted wheat cultivation across the steppe landscape.
The name Akmola means white grave or white abundance in Kazakh and refers to the pale limestone rocks and snow-covered steppes of the area. In rural parts, many families maintain nomadic traditions and raise horses and sheep on wide grazing lands.
The large distances between towns require longer travel times, so planning overnight stops in advance is helpful. During winter months, heavy snowfall and cold temperatures can make movement along country roads more difficult.
The area surrounds the capital city Astana completely like a ring but remains a separate administrative unit with its own government. This unusual arrangement means visitors to the capital cross through the region without formally entering it.
