Jatinga, Tribal village in Dima Hasao district, India
Jatinga is a village situated on a ridge in the Dima Hasao region and surrounded by forested hills and several rivers. The landscape is shaped by the Dollong, Kopili, and Diyung rivers flowing through the valley.
In the 1960s, naturalist E.P. Gee and ornithologist Salim Ali investigated the site's phenomenon, attracting international scientific attention. These investigations made the village known worldwide as a place of special biological interest.
The villagers belong mainly to the Khasi-Pnar people and shape everyday life through traditional agriculture and fruit farming. These practices are visible in the fields and gardens surrounding the homes throughout the settlement.
The place lies a short distance from the administrative center Haflong, making it relatively easy to reach for visitors. The best time for observations is between September and October, when conditions are favorable for the natural phenomenon.
In September and October, visitors witness an unusual natural spectacle where birds descend toward the village lights during dark, foggy nights. This behavior occurs at only a handful of locations worldwide and remains scientifically puzzling.
