Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, Freshwater lake in Arkhangai Province, Mongolia
Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake is a freshwater body covering approximately 23.5 square miles (61 square kilometers) with a length of about 10 miles (16 kilometers) and a width of roughly 3.7 miles (6 kilometers), reaching a maximum depth of 66 feet (20 meters).
The lake was formed when basaltic lava flows from the Khorgo volcano and nearby volcanic vents blocked the Terkhiin River, creating a natural dam that allowed water to accumulate in the valley during recent geological times.
According to local legend, the lake was created when an elderly couple forgot to close a well after drawing water, causing the valley to flood as residents shouted warnings, giving rise to the name Khorgo.
The lake is located at an elevation of approximately 4,387 feet (1,337 meters) and is best visited during summer months when temperatures are moderate and bird activity is at its peak for observation opportunities.
The lake contains a small island called Nuuriin Tolgoi that rises 92 feet (28 meters) above the water level and serves as a nesting site for black cormorants during summer months.
