Dornogovi, Administrative division in southeastern Mongolia
Dornogovi is an administrative region in southeastern Mongolia, covering a wide stretch of steppe and semi-desert terrain that borders China to the south. Its main center is Sainshand, a small city that serves as the main hub for the surrounding area.
The region was set up as an administrative unit in 1931, during the period when Mongolia was building its modern state structure. Long before that, caravans moving between China and western Central Asia crossed through this land.
Herding families in this region move their livestock across open land according to the season and the quality of available pasture. Travelers passing through can spot the round felt tents of nomadic households set up at different spots throughout the year.
Sainshand can be reached from Ulaanbaatar by paved road or by train, making it one of the more accessible points in this part of the country. Anyone venturing beyond the main route should carry enough water and supplies, as towns are few and far apart.
Despite the near absence of visible rivers or lakes, the ground beneath the dry surface holds substantial water reserves that make life in this arid land possible. These hidden sources have been drawn on by nomadic families and their herds for generations.
