Metropolitan Region Amsterdam, Metropolitan area in North Holland and Flevoland provinces, Netherlands.
The Metropolitan Region Amsterdam is a federation of 32 municipalities spreading across North Holland and Flevoland provinces, housing about 2.4 million people. It combines urban centers, airports, ports, and agricultural areas within a single economic and administrative network.
This administrative partnership was founded in 2007 to better coordinate economic growth, housing development, and transportation across its member municipalities. The collaboration enabled more strategic planning for the expanding region surrounding the capital.
The region holds numerous cultural sites, including the renowned Aalsmeer flower auction and historic cities like Haarlem and Zaanstad, each maintaining distinct local traditions and character. These places reflect the varied identities that shape how people here connect with their heritage and daily surroundings.
The area is well connected through two airports and extensive ports for international trade, with a dense public transit network throughout. Visitors can easily reach the municipalities and travel between them using trains, buses, or ferries.
The area encompasses remarkably varied landscapes, from coastal dunes and peat wetlands to the IJmeer-Markermeer freshwater lake system. This blend of nature and developed zones gives each part of the region its own character.
