Suwayq, Coastal province in Al Batinah North Governorate, Oman
Suwayq is a coastal province in Al Batinah North Governorate, northern Oman, covering plains, mountains, and valleys. It runs along the Gulf of Oman coast and includes both settled coastal strips and hillier inland terrain.
Suwayq grew over many centuries into a key trading point on the Gulf of Oman coast. A rectangular fort with three round towers served as the administrative center and was restored in 1992.
Silver crafting and palm weaving are living crafts that visitors can see on local markets today. Traditional performances like Razah and Al Ayyala are still presented at coastal festivals and community gatherings.
The province is well connected to surrounding regions and larger towns by main roads. Visiting the coastal settlements pairs well with a short trip inland, where the landscape changes noticeably.
Natural streams like Al Rahab and Safat Al Ain run through the province and made farming possible in an otherwise dry setting. These water sources explain why permanent settlements took root here across many generations.
