Al Akhdar Mountains

Al Akhdar Mountains is a mountain range in Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate, Oman, with limestone peaks that tower above the surrounding plateaus and valleys. The terrain features steep slopes with agricultural terraces carved into the rock face across its length.

The mountains were the setting of a significant military conflict during the 1950s that lasted several years and disrupted life in the region. This conflict left a lasting mark on the history of the area and shaped its development afterward.

The communities who live here have farmed these slopes for generations using an intricate water system that channels irrigation through the terraced fields. This farming tradition remains central to how the mountains are used and shaped today.

To explore this area, visitors need a sturdy four-wheel drive vehicle as the mountain roads are steep and often unpaved. Entry points require travelers to present identification documents before proceeding into the territory.

The region is known for growing Damask roses, which thrive here due to a rare mountain microclimate similar to Mediterranean conditions. These flowers are processed into rose water following traditional methods that have been practiced for generations.
