Far Eastern Federal District, Federal district in eastern Russia
The Far Eastern Federal District covers the easternmost territories of Russia, reaching from the Pacific coast deep into Siberia. It includes eleven separate administrative regions, among them the Republic of Sakha and Primorsky Territory.
The administrative area was created in May 2000 as part of a reorganization of Russia's federal structure. The administrative headquarters moved from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok in December 2018.
The district incorporates eleven regions, including the Republic of Sakha and Primorsky Krai, each maintaining connections with neighboring Asian countries through trade and customs.
The region has numerous seaports along the Pacific coast that serve as hubs for trade between Russia and neighboring Asian countries. Travelers should keep in mind that distances within the area are very large and connections often run through a few major cities.
The region holds major natural resource deposits, including diamonds in Yakutia and oil on Sakhalin. These natural resources continue to shape the economy of many sub-regions today.
