South Darfur State, Administrative region in western Sudan
South Darfur State extends across 170,000 square miles of plains and mountains, including sections of the elevated Marrah Mountains in its central area.
The region functioned as an independent sultanate until 1874 when Sudanese forces conquered it, followed by incorporation into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1916.
Multiple ethnic groups, including the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit peoples, maintain their languages and traditions alongside Arabic throughout South Darfur State.
The United Nations continues operating humanitarian missions in South Darfur, providing essential resources and support to 2.9 million displaced individuals in camps.
The Marrah Mountains in South Darfur create a microclimate with higher rainfall than surrounding areas, enabling different agricultural practices than the arid plains.
