Kobanê Canton, Administrative canton in northern Syria
Kobanê Canton is an administrative canton of Rojava in northern Syria, bordering Turkey, and made up of parts of the Ayn al-Arab and Tell Abyad districts. The Euphrates River crosses the territory, which consists of farmland, scattered villages, and a few small towns.
The territory declared autonomy in January 2014 and set up local governing bodies based on a co-presidency model. Shortly after, heavy fighting swept through the area, forcing much of the population to flee and leaving large parts of the infrastructure in ruins.
Schools in the canton teach in both Kurdish and Arabic, with each community using its own language as the main medium of instruction. This daily presence of two languages shapes how children grow up and how neighbors from different backgrounds interact.
The region is not easy to reach, and a visit generally requires special permits along with careful attention to current security conditions. Travelers should check the latest advisories from their government before making any plans.
The name Kobanê is thought to come from a local pronunciation of the word "company," referring to a German railway firm that built a station in the area in the early 20th century. That corporate name eventually became the official name of both the town and the canton.
