Kulikalon, Glacial lakes in Zeravshan Mountains, Tajikistan
Kulikalon is a group of three mountain lakes in the Zeravshan range, sitting at around 2800 meters elevation and surrounded by peaks between 3000 and 3500 meters high. The lakes hold clear cold water and are ringed by alpine meadows and forests that spread between the rocky slopes.
The lakes formed through glacial processes thousands of years ago, with meltwater from the Chimtarga glacier continuously feeding their waters. This formation shaped the geology and water systems of the entire mountain region.
The region has long served as pastureland for herding communities who graze their flocks on the mountain meadows around the lakes. Visitors can observe simple shepherd settlements and the traces of this living tradition woven into the landscape.
The lakes serve as a starting point for multi-day treks through the Fann Mountains, with various routes offering different difficulty levels and distances. Visitors should prepare for changeable mountain weather and bring sturdy footwear and warm clothing.
The region holds stands of juniper forest and serves as habitat for rare mountain birds like Himalayan snowcocks and saker falcons. These species inhabit the sparse zones above the tree line and are often spotted by visitors.
