Alpaslan-2 Dam, Hydroelectric power station on Murat River, Muş Province, Turkey
Alpaslan-2 Dam is a hydroelectric facility on the Murat River in Muş Province, designed to generate power and supply water for farming in the area. The structure creates a reservoir that collects water and channels it through turbines to produce electricity for eastern Turkey.
Construction started in 2012 and encountered pauses in 2016 and 2017 before investment helped move the project forward from 2019 onward. The timeline reflects the economic and technical challenges common to major infrastructure works in the region.
The dam development required cooperation with 22 villages in the surrounding area, leading to extensive community engagement and infrastructure modifications.
The site sits in a rural agricultural area and can be viewed from designated vantage points if you plan your visit in advance. Access is easiest by car since the location is distant from towns and public transportation options are limited in this region.
The facility features six radial gates within its spillway system that manage water release for power generation. This technical design allows for precise control of water levels and energy output throughout different seasons and weather patterns.
