Shiding District

Shiding District is an administrative area in New Taipei that spreads across mountainous terrain divided by a river into eastern and western sections linked by an elevated bridge. The district contains residential areas, educational institutions, working tea farms, and forest trails throughout its valleys.

The district rose to prominence during the Qing Dynasty as a trading hub situated on the route to Yilan, with coal mining and tea production becoming major industries. These economic activities shaped the region throughout the following centuries.

Metalworking traditions remain visible in the district, where craftspeople forge knives by hand using techniques passed down over generations. Tea cultivation for the region's distinctive Bao Zhong oolong variety shapes the agricultural landscape and local life.

Regular bus services connect the district to Jingmei Station on the Taipei Metro for easy access from the city. Sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the forest trails and rural areas throughout the mountainous terrain.

A university campus is located within the district, creating an unexpected contrast between academic grounds and the surrounding rural landscape. This blend of educational and agricultural spaces gives the area a distinctive character often overlooked by passing travelers.
