Fongshan District, Administrative district in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Fongshan District is an administrative division in southern Kaohsiung, Taiwan, located east of the city center. The area combines residential neighborhoods and commercial zones with green spaces and historic sites spread across the territory.
The region was originally home to Makatao villages and was called Pongsoya during Dutch colonial times. After Japanese takeover in 1901, the area became known as Hozan Cho and developed into an administrative center.
The name Fengshan comes from the Chinese term for Phoenix Mountain, which refers to a small hill that once stood in the area before urban development covered it. Residents still visit old temples on foot during festivals, walking through narrow streets that connect newer apartment blocks with older shophouses.
The district is accessible through several metro stations on the Kaohsiung system and lies along major road connections. Visitors can explore the different temples on foot but should watch for narrow sidewalks and traffic in residential areas.
The Republic of China Military Academy operates here and has trained officers since 1950, giving the district a distinct military identity. Sections of the old city wall from Qing times still stand near the eastern edge, reminding visitors of the fortified past.
