Cheshire, Ceremonial county in North West England
Cheshire is a ceremonial county in the northwest of England, bordered by Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, and Shropshire. The landscape is shaped by the Cheshire Plain, a low-lying area, and the Mid-Cheshire Ridge, a line of low hills running north to south.
Before the Romans arrived, hill forts from the Bronze and Iron Age marked early settlement in the region. Romans founded a fortress named Deva in Chester in 71 CE, using it as a military base to control Wales and secure the northwest frontier.
Farmers and breeders gather at markets and shows throughout the year to sell livestock and regional produce, keeping agricultural traditions alive. The county fair atmosphere reflects the deep connection between rural life and community identity.
The county is divided into four administrative areas: Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Halton, and Warrington, with Chester serving as the county town. Main roads and rail lines connect the region to Manchester, Liverpool, and the Midlands, making it easy to move between towns.
The red sandstone quarried here has colored not only the soil but also the walls of old churches, manor houses, and farm buildings. This reddish tint gives villages and towns a distinct palette that sets them apart from other parts of England.
