North West England, Administrative region in North West England, Great Britain.
North West England is a region in northwestern Great Britain that stretches from the Irish Sea eastward to the Pennines and covers five counties. The area links coastal cities along the Mersey estuary with inland industrial centers and upland landscapes in the east.
During the 19th century cotton mills and shipyards turned this area into the heart of the industrial revolution. Canals and later railways connected the factories to ports and created a network that enabled trade with the entire world.
The music scene here gave birth to bands like The Beatles in the 1960s and has remained a vital place for new sounds ever since. Today music festivals and live events in the major cities draw visitors from around the world.
Travelers can move between the larger cities easily by train or car while rural areas often require your own vehicle. The landscape changes quickly from coastal lowlands to hills so it helps to adjust weather gear and plans accordingly.
Some textile mills from the 19th century have been converted into apartments, studios or cultural centers and still show the old brick walls and timber beams. These repurposed buildings are especially common in Manchester and surrounding towns.
