The Battle of Saratoga in 1777 proved a turning point in the American Revolutionary War and convinced France to support the colonial cause. The area developed into a popular destination during the 19th century due to its mineral springs and horse racing.
The name Saratoga comes from the Mohawk word Se-rach-ta-gue or Sarach-togue, sometimes translated as 'the water from the hillside spring'. Local mineral springs once drew visitors who believed the waters had healing properties.
