Middletown Township, Township in Monmouth County, United States
Middletown Township is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, stretching along the shore of Raritan Bay and covering several communities and open spaces. The landscape ranges from flat coastal strips to gently rolling inland areas, with residential neighborhoods, fields, and patches of woodland.
European settlers arrived in the region during the early 17th century after Henry Hudson explored the coast in 1609, and English control of the area began in 1664. The community grew from small villages and farms that gradually merged into larger settlements.
The township takes its name from its early settlement position between the surrounding communities and has long served as a residential area where people live and commute to nearby cities. Visitors can see the lighthouse at Sandy Hook and watch ferries crossing the bay toward Manhattan.
The communities are spread across a large area, so a car helps when moving between different beach sections, parks, and centers. Visitors find parking at public beaches and in the town centers, while the coastal stretches are busiest on warm days.
At Naval Weapons Station Earle, a narrow pier stretches nearly three miles (almost five kilometers) into the water, making it one of the longest of its kind in the world. This structure serves military purposes and is only visible from a distance when driving along the coast.
