Damlataş Cave

Damlataş Cave, Natural limestone cave near Cleopatra Beach, Alanya, Turkey

Damlataş is a limestone cave in Alanya that extends about 50 meters into the earth with a 15-meter-high cylindrical chamber filled with stalactites and stalagmites. These mineral formations developed over thousands of years as water slowly carved and decorated the rock surfaces.

Workers accidentally discovered this cave in 1948 while quarrying stone for Alanya Harbor construction. Its geological importance was quickly recognized, and it opened to the public shortly after.

The name Damlataş comes from Turkish words meaning "dripping stone," referring to the water continuously falling from formations overhead. Visitors notice this feature immediately upon entering the first chamber.

The cave maintains a constant temperature of 22 degrees Celsius (72 Fahrenheit) and high humidity, making it comfortable during hot summer months. Wear sturdy shoes as the floor in some areas can be slippery and walkways are tight in places.

The cave's microclimate has therapeutic properties, and medical professionals have supervised patients with breathing problems here for years. Daily exposure to the mineral-laden air in controlled treatment cycles represents an unusual medical use of this natural environment.
