Salou, Coastal municipality in Costa Daurada, Spain
Salou is a town on the Catalan Mediterranean coast that stretches over several kilometers of beach and belongs to the Tarragonès region. The waterfront is crossed by a long promenade where hotels, restaurants and shops line up, while residential areas and smaller commercial districts lie inland.
The settlement grew on a coastal strip that served as a harbor during Roman and medieval times. On October 30, 1989, it gained independent municipality status after previously being part of Vila-seca administration.
The name derives from the Roman term *Salauris*, referring to an ancient settlement. Today you can see modern apartment blocks alongside older Catalan houses along the coast, and families spend their evenings walking the wide pedestrian paths lined with palms.
Reus is 9 kilometers inland and has an airport, while Barcelona's larger airport is around 112 kilometers away. Bus connections run to major Catalan cities, and most beaches are within walking distance from the town center.
Torre Vella dates from 1530 and served as a watchtower against attacks from the sea. The structure still stands in the town center and recalls a time when pirate raids were a daily threat.
