Manasbal Lake, Mountain lake in Ganderbal district, India
Manasbal Lake covers about 2.5 square kilometers at an elevation of around 1,580 meters, surrounded by mountains whose images reflect in its clear waters. The water is clean and calm, making it easy to observe the surrounding landscape and wildlife.
In the 17th century, Nur Jahan commissioned Jaroka Bagh, a Mughal garden that still overlooks the northern shore. This connection to royal patronage shaped how the region developed and is remembered today.
Four villages surround the lake - Jarokbal, Kondabal, Nesbal, and Gratbal - and their residents continue fishing and farming as they have for centuries. You can see how the community's daily rhythm remains connected to the water and the seasons.
You can reach the lake by road from Srinagar, about 30 kilometers away, traveling through several districts and passing small villages. The journey takes a few hours, so plan accordingly when visiting.
Water temperatures shift dramatically with the seasons, dropping to about 6 degrees Celsius in January and rising to around 27 degrees Celsius in summer. These changes create different living conditions that shape the ecosystems of fish and plants in the lake.
