Depsang Plains, High-altitude plain in Aksai Chin, India and China
The Depsang Plains form a high-altitude rocky plateau sitting at about 5,300 meters elevation with a barren, gravelly surface. This terrain lies in a contested border region between Indian and Chinese territories.
The region saw military clashes during the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict, resulting in territorial divisions marked by a contested boundary line. The area has remained tense with military presence since that time.
The plains once formed part of a historic trade corridor that moved goods and travelers between Ladakh and the regions beyond the high mountain passes to the north.
The terrain is accessible to heavy vehicles in few places along the disputed border, which sets it apart among remote frontier areas. This is a strictly controlled military zone with limited access for visitors.
Heavy tanks can operate across parts of this landscape, which is rare along most of the contested border and makes it strategically important. Few other remote frontier areas allow such mechanized movement.
