No. 23 Coombe Road

No. 23 Coombe Road is a two-story house with classical design elements including rusticated pillars, moulded stucco bands, and arched windows on its facade. The property retains these original features and stands near the Hong Kong Police Museum.

The house was built in 1887 by lawyer J.J. Francis and received different names over the decades. During World War II, it served as an officers' quarters for the Canadian Army.

The house shows European tastes that settlers brought to Hong Kong in the late 1800s. The high-ceilinged rooms and large windows reflect how wealthy residents lived at that time.

The house is located near Coombe Road and Wan Chai Gap, within easy walking distance of the area. It is best viewed during daytime to see the architectural details clearly from the outside.

During wartime, the building was not just an officers' shelter but stood in an area that experienced heavy fighting. The fact that the house survived this conflict makes it a rare survivor from that period.
