Schmalkalden-Meiningen, Administrative district in Thuringia, Germany
Schmalkalden-Meiningen extends between the Thuringian Forest Mountains and Rhön Mountains, with the Werra River flowing through its central valley.
The district formed in 1994 through merging Meiningen, Schmalkalden, and Suhl-Land districts, with recent additions from Wartburgkreis in 2019.
Meiningen maintains a professional theater and court orchestra, while both main cities preserve numerous medieval structures and fortifications.
The district spans 1210 square kilometers at elevations from 250 meters in Breitungen to 943 meters at Wildekopf mountain near Zella-Mehlis.
The district coat of arms displays a rooster for Henneberg counts, a lion for Hesse rule, and Saxon insignia for the Saxe-Meiningen duchy.
