Adige, Alpine river in Trentino and Veneto, Italy
The Adige originates near the Reschen Pass in the Alps and reaches the Adriatic after covering 410 kilometers. The river crosses Trentino and Veneto, passes through Verona, and forms a link between mountain regions and the coast.
In 589 the waterway broke through its banks and changed its course permanently. This flood reshaped the landscape and influenced settlement patterns in the region for centuries to come.
The waterway runs through bilingual South Tyrol, connecting communities that speak both German and Italian. Many place names along its banks carry dual designations, reflecting a region where alpine and Mediterranean cultures meet.
Tunnel systems now connect the waterway underground to Lake Garda, regulating water levels during heavy rainfall. These installations protect nearby towns and villages from sudden rises in the water.
In Lake Reschen a medieval bell tower rises from the water, the only visible remnant of a submerged village. The tower recalls the 1950 flooding when a reservoir was created and the old settlement disappeared beneath the surface forever.
