Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, Bus terminal in Kusatsu, Gunma, Japan
Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal is a bus station in Kusatsu, Japan, where travelers arrive to visit the region's famous hot springs. The building has three floors with nine bus bays on the second floor, a waiting lounge on the first floor, plus a restaurant, shops, and an information area that provide comfort and practical services to travelers.
The terminal opened in 1935 as Joshu Kusatsu Station to bring travelers to the hot springs when train service did not reach there yet. After the railway line closed in 1962, it was transformed into the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal and has served buses as the main transport hub for the region ever since.
The name Kusatsu comes from the hot springs that shape life in this town. Visitors notice steam rising from many footbaths filling the streets, while traditional buildings stand beside modern facilities, showing a blend of old craftsmanship and contemporary daily life.
The terminal sits about 10 minutes on foot from the main springs and offers buses to all parts of Japan, with good connections to Tokyo, Karuizawa, and other mountain towns. Visitors find ticket counters, information areas, shops, and restaurants here that help with planning trips and waiting for buses.
The building was constructed in 1988 and received upgrades in 2025 with a new elevator, making it easier for people with mobility challenges to move between floors. The historic site of the former train station was converted into a park with a monument that remembers the railway era and offers visitors a glimpse into the past.
