Omote Manza Snow Park, Ski resort in Tsumagoi, Japan.
Omote Manza Snow Park is a ski resort on the southwestern slopes of Mount Shirane, in the Tsumagoi area of Gunma Prefecture, Japan. It has four lifts and eight runs spread across the mountain face.
The resort opened in 1984 under the management of the Prince Group, a Japanese company that ran several mountain resorts across the country during that era. Regular winter operations stopped in 2011.
The area sits close to the Manza hot spring village, where sulfur-rich waters have drawn visitors for generations. Many people combine a day on the slopes with an evening soak in one of the nearby baths, which is a common habit in this part of Japan.
The resort sits at high elevation, so checking the weather forecast before heading up is a good idea since conditions can shift quickly. Roads leading to the area can be icy in winter, and snow tires or chains are generally recommended.
The resort was built on the slopes of an active volcano, which is not uncommon in Japan but still sets this place apart from most ski destinations in other countries. Mount Shirane remains volcanically active, and the nearby hot springs are a direct result of that underground heat.
