Al-Quds University, university in East Jerusalem
Al-Quds University is a higher education institution in Jerusalem with its main campus in Abu Dis and additional locations in the Old City, Sheikh Jarrah, and Beit Hanina. It offers 15 faculties with approximately 55 undergraduate and 45 postgraduate programs in fields such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, arts, and engineering.
The university was founded in 1977 as a merger of smaller schools and has since developed into the only Arab Palestinian university in Jerusalem. The Old City campus opened in 2015 with support from a Bahraini charity and follows traditional Islamic architectural style.
The university carries the name Al-Quds, which means Jerusalem in Arabic, reflecting its central role in Palestinian identity. Students and staff work together to create knowledge that shapes the community and integrates local history and culture into their academic work.
The main campus is located in Abu Dis, about 4 miles (6 km) south of the Old City, while specialized locations in different neighborhoods divide classes by discipline. Visitors should note that the campus is situated at multiple sites and that security checks are conducted at entrances.
The Abu Dis main campus was attacked multiple times by Israeli soldiers in 2013, resulting in injuries to students and staff, yet the institution continued operating. These attacks occurred even when visitors were present on site, yet the university remains a symbol of resilience and the persistence of education in the region.
