Bukom Island, Industrial island complex in southern Singapore.
Bukom Island is an industrial complex in southern Singapore made up of several connected landmasses. The site contains major refining and port facilities that shape the working landscape of the region.
The island was chosen in the late 1800s as a storage depot for oil products and grew into an oil processing center. It later expanded into a major industrial facility with international importance.
During the 1960s, Bukom maintained a population of 5,000 residents with markets, religious buildings, schools, cinema, and community facilities.
The site is not open to the public and requires special permits for any visits. Security rules are strict because it remains an active industrial facility.
It was once a thriving residential community with markets and schools for worker families. Today little of this remains visible, as the land is now entirely dedicated to modern industrial operations.
