Kallang River, Natural waterway in Southeast Singapore
Kallang River is a waterway in Southeast Singapore that flows 10 kilometers from Lower Peirce Reservoir through Bishan and Toa Payoh districts before reaching Marina Channel. It passes through populated areas and forms part of an interconnected water system across the city.
Before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived in 1819, the Biduanda Orang Kallang settled near the river mouth and fished the waters. The river's name preserves the memory of this early people who shaped the area for generations.
The river links multiple neighborhoods and hosts dragon boat racing and public art exhibitions along its banks. These events shape how residents spend their leisure time and connect with the waterway.
The Kallang Park Connector Network offers walking paths and cycling routes along the river, linking residential areas with recreational spaces. The routes are flat and accessible, making them ideal for strolling, jogging, or cycling at any time of day.
Following extensive redevelopment, the waterway now serves as part of Marina Reservoir's water catchment system with naturalized banks. These modern filtration capabilities allow it to store and clean water for the city's supply.
