Mandai, Planning area in North Region, Singapore
Mandai is a planning area in Singapore's North Region situated between Yishun and Woodlands. It is organized into three subzones: Mandai Estate, Mandai East, and Mandai West.
Mandai Road was constructed in 1855, with the name first appearing in the Franklin and Jackson Plan of 1828 as 'R. Mandi' for a river. The area's naming was rooted in these historical water routes.
The name Mandai comes from either a Malay tree species or the word 'mandi', which refers to river bathing practices common in the region. This linguistic connection shows how the area was historically tied to water and local vegetation.
The area contains several military facilities including Mandai Camp, Mandai West Camp, and Mandai Hill Camp. Visitors should be aware that access to parts of the area may be restricted due to these installations.
Mandai houses Singapore's largest crematorium and columbarium complex, which serves as a major facility for final rites and remembrance. This installation plays a central role in the traditional transition rituals for many residents.
