Shenzhen Library, Public library in Lianhua Subdistrict, Shenzhen, China
Shenzhen Library is a public city library in the Lianhua Subdistrict, housed in a modern building with large glass walls that let in plenty of natural light. It spans several floors with reading rooms, computer stations, and collections covering a wide range of subjects.
The library traces its roots to the former Bao'an County Library, growing alongside Shenzhen as the city expanded rapidly after becoming a Special Economic Zone in the 1980s. The current building near Civic Center replaced an older site and opened in the early 2000s.
The library sits on Civic Center Plaza alongside a concert hall and a museum, forming a public space that people use throughout the day. On weekends, families and students gather on the surrounding square, making it a natural meeting point in the city.
Entry is free but requires a valid ID, so carry your passport or identification card when you visit. The library is easy to reach by metro, with the nearest station just a short walk away.
The building was designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, who later received the Pritzker Prize, the highest award in architecture. This makes the library one of the few public buildings in China designed by a Pritzker laureate.
