Pacific Gas and Electric Company General Office Building and Annex

Pacific Gas and Electric Company General Office Building and Annex, Historic office building in Financial District, San Francisco, United States.

The Pacific Gas and Electric Company General Office Building is a 17-story administrative structure in the Financial District with terra cotta cladding and arcaded lower sections. The upper floors feature multiple setbacks and paired Doric columns with full entablature.

The building was constructed between 1923 and 1925 during the rise of California's power supply industry. An annex was added in 1945 to accommodate the company's expanding operations.

The facade displays Beaux-Arts elements with classical arcades and allegorical representations of power and light at the two-story entrance. These symbols reflect the importance of energy in the city's early industrial development.

The building sits at 245 Market Street and continues to serve as the administrative center for one of California's largest utility companies. Visitors can view the exterior and entrance area during normal business hours.

The columns in the upper floors echo the design of the nearby City Hall dome, even though this building was completed several years earlier. This subtle architectural reference visually connects two important civic structures.
