Millennium Tower, Modern residential high-rise in South of Market district, San Francisco, US.
Millennium Tower is a residential tower rising 196 meters across 58 floors in San Francisco's South of Market district. The building's glass walls reflect the surrounding cityscape and contain 419 residential units with communal areas inside.
Handel Architects designed this residential tower, which opened its doors in April 2009. Starting in 2016, engineers began documenting settling and tilting, later prompting extensive stabilization work.
The name reflects the vision of modern urban living entering the new millennium, and the glass facade shifts color with the time of day and weather. Many residents work in the nearby Financial District or for technology companies, shaping the neighborhood into a residential hub for high earners.
The tower sits in the South of Market district a few blocks south of Market Street, in an area with many high-rises and shops. Twelve elevators serve the residential floors, and the building offers fitness areas and private lounges for residents.
Sensors throughout the building continuously monitor movement and tilt, and the monitoring data form part of ongoing investigations into structural stability. Visitors on the street cannot immediately see the tower's slant, but measurement shows a tilt of several centimeters at the top.
