535 Mission Street, Modern office skyscraper in South of Market district, San Francisco, US
535 Mission Street is a modern office tower with 27 floors and a glass exterior that reflects daylight across the surrounding streets. Retail spaces and a two-story lobby occupy the ground level, leading out to a public plaza.
Construction began in 2008 but paused during the financial crisis, resuming when Boston Properties took over the project in 2013. The building was completed in 2014.
The ground floor opens onto an outdoor plaza where people gather to sit and watch the street activity below the towers. This public space feels connected to the busy neighborhood around it.
The building sits near the Transbay Transit Center, making it easy to reach by public transportation from different parts of the city. The ground-level plaza is open to the public for sitting and taking a break.
The tower was San Francisco's first LEED Platinum Core and Shell certified office building, achieved through advanced water-saving systems and energy-efficient design. Few visitors realize that the building's glass exterior and mechanical systems were engineered to reduce environmental impact.
